Born a Brand: Dr. Arlene meets Alexandre Renoir

I love to watch the building of name brands. I first met Alexandre Renoir, the great grandson of Pierre-Auguste Renoir, more than a year ago at a Beverly Hills art gallery on Rodeo Drive. This was a big night for Alex. A grand opening -- his paintings were on display in a gallery with a global presence. The guests surrounded Alex, who was dressed in a short-sleeve Hawaiian style brightly-colored flowered shirt.

On Saturday, October 12th, I met Alex again at the same gallery. I immediately told him how wonderful he looked. He had dropped between 30 or 40 pounds and was stylishly dressed in a suit. I saw a transformation both in how he looked and how he painted. The prices on the paintings had escalated dramatically, reflecting the caliber of his recent work.

As a child, Alex hated the fact that he had a famous last name. He grew up surrounded with constant reminders of “the Renoir”, including a bookcase which contained 500 books about his great grandfather. Instead of using his brand name to his advantage, he wanted to escape from it. Six years ago, after having many jobs, Alex decided to devote himself to painting. Alexandre Renoir is 38 years old. Finally, he separated himself from his great grandfather and found his own brand.

It’s rare to be born with a brand name, especially a mega brand name like Renoir. But, you must have a brand, not necessarily a name brand.

To succeed in capturing a job, you need a distinct, intriguing, and recognizable brand.

I look at lots of resumes, bios, and business websites. Some resumes are making me dizzy. I am so distracted by extraneous information, charts, and unusual layouts, I don’t know what to read. It's clear to me that these resumes are not working. What's missing is a cohesive brand.

Visualize Jimmy Kimmel’s Socks Before an Interview

It’s the season for firing, promoting, and hiring. If you think that your job is secure, think again. By the end of the year someone else could be sitting in your chair.


What should you do and not do right now?


If you are either employed or unemployed and searching for a new position, you should:

• accelerate your search targeting early to mid-January to start your new position. Do not allow the upcoming holiday season to distract you from forging ahead.

• evaluate your resume to determine whether you have a distinct, intriguing, and recognizable brand to attract the employers’ attention in a 30 second glance.

• assess your communication skills, including your ability to read between the lines, when speaking with employers and convincing employers to hire you.


If you are employed, you should:

• not walk away from your job unless you have another position – goodbye packages do not last forever. Do not assume that you will capture the right fit job quickly.

• write a report detailing your accomplishments, not what you do. Focus on impact, results, and achievements for 2012. Submit that report in October to the person to whom you report and other key decision-makers. This report could help you retain your position as well as set the stage for a promotion.

• arrange a time to discuss your 2012 achievements with the person to whom you report. It’s very important to walk that person through the report and hear feedback on your performance.


Right now we have 3.7 million unfilled jobs. Do you know how to capture the job that is the right one for you?


Be sure to watch the three upcoming presidential debates which are job interviews. Forget the political candidates’ party affiliation. Focus on what Obama and Romney are saying. Look for distractors and objections which have a significant impact on their brands. Not sure how this works? I’ll give you an example of a blatant distractor.

On the Emmy Awards show, Jimmy Kimmel exposed his pantless legs displaying his short socks. If he had been a candidate on an interview wearing pants and had crossed his legs, the bare legs could distract the employer. From firsthand experience, it HAS distracted employers. Presidential Branding?

Presidential Branding?

Shortly, the Republicans and the Democrats will be holding their conventions.

Are the presidential contenders branding themselves wisely?

Here's my take. In my opinion, they are not. The mudslinging on both sides is supposed to serve as a sledgehammer to destroy the opponent. The success of that approach is questionable.

What should the contenders be doing? Only pitching themselves and acting as if the other does not exist.

When you present yourself at an interview, you must adopt the mindset that I am the one and only Right Fit. That means you never think about or ask whether other candidates are interviewing for the postition that you want. Your goal is to convince the employer, at the first interview, that you are the One Right Fit. If you do not, then the probability of you getting the job decreases as employers continue to compare and contrast candidates, or decide to eliminate the job.

Now is the time to accelerate your job search. Be sure that your resume communicates your brand and that you take charge of the employer interview.

How Will the Election Season Impact Your Career?

Traditionally, the last quarter of the year and especially in December, employers are very busy making hiring, firing, and promoting decisions. This year, the results of the presidential election could have a significant impact on employer behavior.

Accelerate Your Job Search

I am concerned that many jobseekers, especially those that are suddenly unemployed, are not moving efficiently and effectively to capture their next position. If you recently lost your job, I highly recommend that YOU do not take several weeks off before beginning your job campaign. Think of this quarter as the last quarter of the year. Accelerate your job search with passion, precision, and planning.

Employed and hearing rumors of your company merging, downsizing, or closing? Do not wait to find out whether the rumors are true. Begin your job search right now! Remember, YOU can always turn down an offer!

Expecting a promotion? Take charge and actively pursue that promotion immediately. If you are told that the promotion will not become effective for several months, determine if the employer is purposely delaying for some unexplained reason which may or may not be related to the election.

I do not know what the impact of the election could have on your career. What I do know is that employers react strongly to changes or potential changes which they believe will have a positive or negative impact on their bottom line. I do not want you to become an unfortunate victim.

Your resume is an ad. Does it work?

If you know that your resume has not been an effective ad in capturing a new position, I suggest that you email the resume to me. I will review the first 10 resumes that I receive and give you feedback. I must receive your resume no later than Friday, June 29th at 6PM PT.

I look at lots of resumes, bios, and business websites. Some resumes are making me dizzy. I am so distracted by extraneous information, charts, and unusual layouts, I don’t know what to read. It's clear to me that these resumes are not working. What's missing is a cohesive brand.

If you are saying, how can a job search plan be happy? It's quite simple. Stop focusing on how you feel. Instead, think about creative ways to access jobs, approach employers, and package yourself. Embrace doing the job search. Think of it as an opportunity to learn and to challenge yourself. Adopt a happy attitude, visualize capturing a new job, and then write your Happy Job Search Plan. Remember, your career success is up to YOU!

Visualize Your Success and Succeed

In order to succeed in your job search, YOU must visualize yourself receiving the Right Fit Offer and accepting it. I believe that you need to spend more time imagining your success. It is that vision that will motivate you to sustain the relentless pursuit to achieve your goal.

Pause to Ponder

I have observed that many are undecided about what is the Right Fit Offer. If you have not created a blueprint of the Right Fit Job which would include the Right Fit Offer, YOU will not be able to visualize your success and succeed. If you have not created your blueprint, I suggest that you pause to ponder right now, and write that blueprint, as soon as possible. Then, you will be ready to plan your campaign.

Strategize to Succeed

After YOU are holding your blueprint in your hand, start to visualize your success. Then, create a written plan which will include the specific strategies and tasks that you will implement on a daily basis. But that's not enough! You must schedule your day to achieve results, such as finalizing your resume which includes your unique brand, scheduling an interview or staying in touch with your references.

Visualize Your Success to Succeed, Pause to Ponder, and Strategize to Succeed appear to be easy to do. They are not. Have you mastered my Right Fit Method which is the key to your career success? Process or Results?

Let's set the record straight. I have observed that jobseekers spend a lot of time talking about what they are doing or have done at work. That's the process.

On your resume, YOU must incorporate positive results which are the outcomes. The resume must be carefully balanced to incorporate some process information, but the focus must be on positive results. For some professions such as financial executives, process is very important. Recognizing that the process should be clearly articulated succinctly, and the positive results must stand out. For all professions, employers need to know how your performance can have a positive impact on the bottom line.

To elicit an offer is a complex task. Accepting an offer makes you feel good, but YOU must perform specific activities to maintain your work marriage. What are those activities and when should they start?

Persuade Decision-Makers to HIRE YOU

Eliciting the job offer that YOU want is a complex task. I have observed that those who are dazzled with multiple offers can do the following:

  • Exude confidence in themselves

  • Identify the decision-makers quickly

  • Establish rapport early in the interview process

  • Anticipate objections and eliminate them at the initial interview

  • Read between the lines and effectively use that information

Whether you are searching for a new job, seeking a promotion from your current employer or pursuing consulting clients, YOU must pintpoint the hidden decision-makers. Who are they? That requires sleuthing around. To do that, you must be an expert in direct observation, reading between the lines, and asking the right questions.

Are YOU a super sleuth?

To master the art of the close, YOU must be a super sleuth with finely-tuned skills. I have observed that jobseekers and consultants try to close the wrong people. Why?
