A two-time winner of the National Magazine Award--the Pulitzer Prize of magazine writing--Fried has been a prolific writer of feature stories and personal essays for Vanity Fair, The Washington Post Magazine, GQ, Rolling Stone, Glamour, and Philadelphia magazine (where he also served for two years as editor-in-chief.) His most recent book, Husbandry, is a collection of essays he wrote as the "Heart of a Husband" columnist at Ladies' Home Journal..
His 2002 book The New Rabbi—which is in the news again since its main character, beloved and charismatic Rabbi Wolpe, recently died--was highly praised by the New York Times, Washington Post and Boston Globe and featured on "All Things Considered." It was chosen as one of the best books of the year by Publishers weekly, which said, "Stephen Fried took what many would consider a mundane topic-a Jewish congregation searching for a new rabbi-and turned it into a marvelous journalistic memoir that recorded his own spiritual development as well as a community's quest for leadership" And it was named one of the year's top 10 books on religion and spirituality by beliefnet.com.
Rabbi Gerald Wolpe who died on May 18, 2009 at the age of 81, was married to Dr. Arlene's first cousin Elaine. Fried, writing about Wolpe’s death, said "American Jews lost one of our great sermonizers, one of our most fascinating and challenging pulpit leaders, and a renaissance rabbi whose dramatic life yielded several distinct acts, each with its own powerful teaching moments."

Gunner Johnson: Creator of throne "IS" used in the film Batman Forever Dr. Arlene will interview Gunner Johnson, who grew up through his teens in Northern California. As a child, he was very destructive. He caused a lot of mayhem in need of an outlet for his energy. Even later in life he took a lot of chances in pursuit of a life on the edge, a characteristic that shows clearly in his work and which makes his art so unique.
In 1990, with no prior experience or formal training, he began drawing, painting, and sculpting. In Gunner's words, "I opened a door and found a sky." "Sky" being his world of art. A world of intricate design and detail, of strange objects and subject matter, challenging juxtapositions of dark and light, and of torch and steel.
In 1994, Gunner was injured in the Northridge earthquake in Los Angeles and began reading more metaphysical and philosophical books while confined in a leg cast. Within three weeks (fitted with a walking cast) and a new determination, he exploded into a new level of expression.
He is an artist that sees poetic beauty in the transformation of an ordinary Spitfire hood into a "hovercraft" for a larger-than-life alien woman shaped entirely of polished steel which rotates 360 degrees on a pedestal. Original, thought provoking, and mind bending.
Today he creates rather than destroys. His art is a blend of magic, mysticism, demons and heroes. It has been said that he brings to life incredible form and beauty from assumed destruction. He turns lifeless items, such as burnt pieces of wood from the Topanga fires, into the legs of a throne. Used in the film Batman Forever. Listen in to hear about Gunner's visions and how he uses those visions to create his artwork.
